Chair of water fluoridation committee, Carolyn Parrish, misled students about Peel’s F chemical

Posted December 11, 2017:

You can’t make this stuff up!

Carolyn Parrish, Chair of Peel’s water fluoridation committee, revealed in an email copied to dozens of people (pasted below) that she has no idea what chemical the region is currently using as a water fluoridation agent.

In an email intended to shame our local safe-water hero, Councillor John Sprovieri, Parrish falsely insisted that the region no longer adds hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFSA) to our drinking water [false!!], and that the region now uses the naturally occurring (but still toxic) mineral, calcium fluoride, instead [false!!].

Calcium fluoride was never even seriously considered as an alternative fluoridation agent; see page 14… the options considered by the region were HFSA derived from phosphate, HFSA derived from calcium fluoride, powdered Sodium Fluorosilicate, powdered Sodium Fluoride, and Pharmaceutical Grade [Sodium] Fluoride : http://www.peelregion.ca/council/agendas/2016/2016-06-09-cwfc-agenda.pdf].

Here is a letter calling for Parrish’s resignation, or removal by Council: https://www.fluoridefreepeel.ca/chair-of-peels-water-fluoridation-committee-must-resign/

Update: here you will find video (starting at 1 hour, 34 minutes) of Council’s discussion on this matter, Thurs. Dec. 14.  Simply unbelieveable.   Parrish tried to blame a spell-checker for her misinformation, then she and others desperately tried to cover up their incompetence by shutting down Councillor Sprovieri’s effort to get an explicit statement from Staff on which chemical the Region now uses.  And Bonnie Crombie & Grant Gibson try to shame Councillor Sprovieri for telling the truth to the students who reached out to Council stating their disgust over water fluoridation!

Dear students from xxx PS,

Thank you very much for conducting me regarding Artificial Water Fluoridation and for doing research on this outdated, ineffective and possibly dangerous practice of adding Hydrofluorosilicic Acid [HFSA] to our drinking water supply.

It is crucially important to point out that, Municipalities that still Fluoridate their water supply use a Toxic Waste product, [HFSA] derived from the fertilizer industry.  [See attachments here: https://www.fluoridefreepeel.ca/councillor-sprovieris-attachments-for-students/]

As you can see in the attached material that I am providing for your review, HFSA is made up of Silica, Fluoride, Arsenic, Lead, Mercury, and traces of other Toxic substances, all know to be harmful to people and the environment.

The attached documentations from the Supreme Court of Canada, Health Canada, the Minister of Health and long term care, the CDC, the US EPA, the NSF International, the National Institute of Dental Research, The National Academy of Science, the National Research Council, and Peel Regional Staff, will give you a clear picture that there is something very Fishy about Water Fluoridation.

The Fishiest part of Water Fluoridation is the memo from the Minister of Health and Long Term Care dated January 7, 2016 to all the Heads of Council in Ontario that promotes Water Fluoridation. The Minister states that poor Oral Health is linked to diabetes, Heart disease, respiratory conditions, Osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and low birth weight in babies and [water fluoridatoin] must be recognized as a very important measure to protect the Health of Ontarians.

It is interesting to note that 70% of Canadian Towns and Cities have discontinued Water Fluoridation due to Negative Health affect and Ethical concerns.

It is also interesting to note that Mississauga’s MPP Delaney introduced a private members bill in 2015, was unanimously supported by all parties and MPP’s, went to the second reading and was abandoned. Given the importance of Water Fluoridation given by Health Canada and the Provincial Minister of Health and long term care, ask yourselves why has Health Canada and the Provincial Minister of Health stood by and watched most of Canada defect from Water Fluoridation?

Based on the attached material, my conclusion is that Water Fluoridation violates, the Food and Drug Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Charter Right and Freedoms, is not effective and is not safe. That may be why Health Canada and the Provinces have refused to take responsibility and Liability and legislate water Fluoridation to all the people in Canada.

Students, I should point out that 98% of Europe, 70% of Canada and 35% of the U.S. have ended water fluoridation and it is encouraging to see that the movement to end water fluoridation in Peel Region is gaining some ground with your involvement.

I have found that most people are not aware that their local Councillors are approving adding a Toxic Waste product to their drinking water supply, and when they do find out, the people will demand that Councillors stop force medicating them with a Toxic Waste Product. Students, spread the word and let your family and friends know that a useless Toxic Chemical is being added to our water supply.

Regards, John. John Sprovieri,Wards 9 & 10 Regional Councillor Brampton Ont. 905 874 2610.

To the students from xx School,

I have been copied on a recent communication to your school by Councillor John Sprovieri. As Chair of the Region of Peel’s Fluoride Subcommittee, I am shocked at Councillor Sprovieri’s implication that the Region of Peel continues to add Hydrofluorosilicic Acid (HFSA) to our drinking water when he knows full well the Region has converted to calcium fluoride, which is not a toxic waste product derived from the fertilizer industry and does not contain the toxic substances referenced in his letter. Councillor Sprovieri knows full well – because he was on the committee and voted to change the chemical additive – we do not use HFSA in Peel. We, and he, also voted with the rest of council, unanimously, to reduce the amount of fluoride in our water supply to the lowest amount deemed effective to protect against tooth decay.

Councillor Sprovieri implied in the statement “Municipalities that still Fluoridate their water supply use a Toxic Waste product, [HFSA] derived from the fertilizer industry,” that Peel is one of those municipalities. This is purposely misleading, politicizing an issue that is already fraught with extreme views on both sides.

As a former teacher there are several tenants I always operate on: tell the truth, look at all sides of an issue and be prepared to compromise when an answer to your research is not crystal clear.

The Council for the Region of Peel voted unanimously, after 18 months of study, to compromise with a solution we believe to be safe, reasonable and progressive. The issue will be revisited in three years when the results of our changes can be studied and evaluated.

I am most disappointed in Councillor Sprovieri’s letter to your class. He’s entitled to his opinion, but not to his own set of facts.

Sincerely, Carolyn Parrish

Hi Carolyn,

As you are aware, I have been researching Water Fluoridation for the past 6 years, have a good understanding of the product used to Fluoridate our drinking water supply and can’t be easily fooled by calling the fluoridation product by another name.

Attached you will see two quality certificates that gives the chemical analysis 0f the Fluoridation product. One is dated January 8, 2013 and the other is dated July 10, 2017.  [Attachment: https://www.fluoridefreepeel.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Hydrofluosilicic-Acid-Specifications-list-of-contaminants.pdf]

As you can see both certificates gives the chemical analysis for Fluorosilicic Acid, which is H2SiF6 and both have the same Toxic components, Fluoride, Arsenic and Lead.

As you are well aware, Health Canada requires Toxicology Reviews of the Fluoridation product to ensure its safety. Although Regional staff claim that the Toxicology studies have been done, as you can see in the attached material that I provided to the students, Health Canada, the US EPA, NSF International and the FDA have not done any such studies and Fluoride has never been approved as being safe and effective by any of the above.

I suggest that you go over the material that I have provided to the students very carefully and you may see the light on Artificial Water Fluoridation.

Regards, John.

Actually Carolyn Parrish, you just blatantly misled to everyone copied on your email. It’s really sad when grade 8 students know more about what it going into our drinking water than the Chair of the committee that studied the issue for 2 full years.
I pointed out this same “error” to you on July 6th, 2017, after you made the same “mistake” during a televised public meeting. God only knows how many people you have “mistakenly” told the new chemical is “calcium fluoride” since then.

The Region still adds HFSA to our drinking water (as admitted on the Region’s webpage, note that fluorosilicic acid (FSA) is just another name for HFSA: http://www.peelregion.ca/health/fluoride/).

For years, until just a few months ago, the industrial waste HFSA dumped in our water was from the phosphate industry [as confirmed in the 1983 Memo from Rebecca Hanmer, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water, EPA: https://www.fluoridefreepeel.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/hanmer1983.pdf, and the Region, see page 26: https://www.peelregion.ca/council/agendas/2016/2016-06-09-cwfc-agenda.pdf], and to my knowledge it is still true in most fluoridated communities.

The Region claims that new version of HFSA is derived from calcium fluoride (without providing any supporting documentation, and refusing to provide any information whatsoever about this new chemical aside from the fact that it contains less arsenic and lead than the previous HFSA (see page 16: “Concentration [of arsenic and lead] in HFSA (from Calcium Fluoride)“: https://www.peelregion.ca/council/agendas/2016/2016-06-09-cwfc-agenda.pdf).

For for the last several months we have not been allowed to know the exact origin of your new toxic byproduct HFSA, thanks to the information-blackout that you, Ms. Parrish, instigated by convincing Council to shut down the water fluoridation committee indefinitely and have all communications on the topic deferred to the indefinitely-suspended committee.

Cute, and it’s no surprise that you don’t want the committee reconvened for at least 3 years, since re-opening the issue would put your gross incompetence/criminal negligence/consumer fraud/self-serving nature and/or extreme stupidity on display for everyone to see. Please do the community a favour, and resign.
Thanks to you, we know nothing of the levels of other contaminants in your new HFSA. The sketchy new supplier has also refused to answer any questions about it.
The only information I have been able to find regarding HFSA derived from calcium fluoride is from Wikipedia, apparently confirming that your new filth is also industrial waste.

Hexafluorosilicic acid…Other names Fluorosilicic acid, fluosilic acid, hydrofluorosilicic acid, silicofluoride, silicofluoric acid, oxonium hexafluorosilanediuide, oxonium hexafluoridosilicate(2−)
Hexafluorosilicic acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula (H 3O) 2SiF 6 … the isolated compound is then written as H 2SiF6·2H 2O….

…The commodity chemical hydrogen fluoride is produced from fluorspar by treatment with sulfuric acid.[7] As a by-product, approximately 50 kg of (H3O)2SiF6 is produced per tonne of HF…s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexafluorosilicic_acid#p-search

Peel and Toronto switched chemicals, hoping that by doing so safe water advocates would become confused and stop calling the new HFSA “industrial waste”, when it appears that it is exactly that.

HFSA is classified as Dangerous Goods / Hazardous Materials in Transport Canada (2012) Emergency Response Guidebook: http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2012/tc/T22-44-2012-eng.pdf.

The same chemical that wreaked havoc on highway 401 last winter, as confirmed by Toronto Star, etc: https://www.fluoridefreepeel.ca/hfsa-spilled-on-401-toronto-star-confirmed/

Ms. Parrish, as you know, both arsenic and lead have no known safe level in drinking water, according to the EPA, MCLG = 0. The MCLG is defined as the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. Heath Canada says that both should be kept as low as possible in drinking water. (I provided Council this information during a delegation in September 2016, and others have pointed it out over and over again in throughout the years.)

World Health Organization also states that: There is no known level of lead exposure that is considered safe (see Key Facts: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs379/en/)

Students, and anyone else interested in knowing the truth, I would urge you to watch Dr. William Hirzy, longtime EPA scientist, discuss this issue. On June 29th, 2000, Dr. Hirzy was invited to give testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on behalf of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Chapter 280 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Headquarters. Dr. Hirzy is still devoted to ending water fluoridation, as the evidence against it continues to mount year after year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViNNIwmzTzI
