Notes re Peel candidates on water fluoridation

(Last updated Oct. 18, 3:20 pm)

FFP recently collected all of the email addresses listed for the candidates who are running for Mayor or Regional Councillor in Peel Region (Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon), from the city/town websites.

(Note that only “Regional” Councillors  vote on this issue.  In Brampton and Caledon there are some “city”/”area” Councillors who do not sit on the Regional Council.)

I asked the candidates to answer the question below and let them know I would be sharing their responses with the public.  I also let them know about the studies that were just published, as well as some environmental information for the Caledon candidates.

If elected, would you support or oppose the fluoridation of
   our public drinking water?

A handful of replies have come in so far, mostly from Mississauga; they are provided below.  First, some brief personal observations.

John Sprovieri, longtime Brampton Councillor, has been our safe drinking water political hero for many years now and is running for Mayor of Brampton.  John is the only politician that I feel 100% certain can be counted on to do his very, very best on this issue.  He would have retired years ago but carried on due to his commitment to this issue.

Current Caledon Ward 1 Councillor, now running for Mayor of Caledon, Barb Shaughnessy – has been helpful at times, and has indicated in the past that she does not support fluoridation.

Michael Palleschi (Brampton Wards 2 & 6) has been helpful, and a member of the Region’s CWF committee.

Johanna Downey (Caledon Ward 2) is also a committee member and seems like a decent person who wants to do the right thing.  Same for John Kovac (Mississauga Ward 4).

Linda Jeffrey (Brampton Mayor) and Bonnie Crombie (Mississauga Mayor) have worked against our efforts for unfluoridate water.  I have no nice words for these ladies.  Ditto for Misississauga Councillors Carolyn Parrish (Ward 5) and Karen Ras (Ward 2), and my Brampton Ward 3/4 Councillor Martin Medeiros.

Caledon Mayor Allan Thompson has supported fluoridation.

[Note that Gordon Sinclair was a vocal opponent of fluoridation.]

“Gordon Sinclair was my Uncle, my Father’s oldest Brother. Below find Uncle Gordon’s 1959 radio column on fluoride. His position is timeless. I support it.

“I will not oppose your opinion but there are a lot of agencies, public health experts and professionals ( Scientists) who have spent their lives in research activities are involved. I will raise this matter with the other public health and provincial agencies to take up this matter for a concrete result that no more Flouride need in our drinking water.”

I am staunchly against the fluoridation of the public water. I would like to further add that I will use every resource and tool at my disposal to reverse this barbaric practice. Our Mayor and the majority of the council members are complicit in the soft poisoning, of our citizens; in which the children and seniors are most affected.

The science that they use is fake and skewed.

Please let me know how I can assist your organization in furthering this initiative?

I shall review the studies in detail. I would like this initiative to gain momentum fast. Please inform the supporters of Fluoride Free Peel of my position and long standing attitude on fluoride. We need our voices heard and we need to vote in the right type of change into city hall. “

“…This issue is a serious one and you have provided and referred to a lot of information that would have to be considered before forming an opinion at this stage. Also, with a court case pending, it is somewhat pre-emptive doing so at this point. I firmly believe in health and safety above all.

I will point to my campaign focus (see attached presentation) on involving residents in the decision-making process relating to matters that affect their lives. Surprisingly aligned to this is a focus on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report, which calls on all Canadians to participate in the Calls to Action. Water issues are a part of this and I encourage your group to consider this moving forward. Thank you.”
